November 2007
Bear with me please as I type too quickly on a Turkish keyboard (a little bit different alphabet) but...MERHABA! What has happened thus far: We flew in to the Istanbul airport. I took my anti jetlag homeopathic pills throughout the flight but was a bit tired after the 18 hours between home and the airport. I vaguely recall getting to the Hertz counter after clearing all the international flight stuff. We stood at the counter, trying to sort out who should have what documentation, and I remember thinking how big and pretty the rental car guy’s eyes were. Very Byzantine...OK, duh. What a revelation. Like the fact the Siennese have green skin due to the chemistry of their drinking water, the Byzantine types really have huge eyes. (This was really amusing at the time of thought). So anyway, we finally got a little Fiat and headed west to Edirne to sleep and to see some really cool old mosques. AND cross the Greek and Bulgarian borders! We found our pension in the golden light of late day. The town was dry, pastel and angular in the baked terrain. Dogs, people and tiny cats swarmed the flat dusty streets, talking and weaving around the fruit sellers` stands and market stalls.
